Course Outline

Local and metropolitan area network functions, structures, and access protocols are studied. Performance modeling and analysis of multiaccess techniques in polling, ring, and random access networks. Ethernet, 100 Mbps Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet. Standards, example products, high-speed LANs (FDDI), metropolitan area networks (IEEE 802.6 DQDB), and recent directions in research (local lightwave networks).
